Castle District, Budapest

Castle Hill sits above the Danube on the Buda side of Budapest. This is what remains of medieval Budapest and is a great place to go for a walk and fill up on history.

Castle District

Castle Hill contains some of Budapest's most important monuments including the Royal Palace, Fisherman’s Bastion, the Matthias Church, Military History Museum, and the list goes on.

To get to Castle Hill there are several options. The easiest, if you’re coming over from Pest, is to cross the Chain Bridge and then take the Funicular (basically like an outdoor elevator) up the hill, or walk up the stairs. Another option is to take the metro (or bus or tram, whichever you find easier) to Moskva Ter and then walk up the stairs and look for the buses that have little Castle logos either beside the words “Varbusz” on the top of the bus, or on a white placard sitting in the window. There are lots of them, and they all go straight to the Castle (Var).
